Benjamin Riley Perry was born the left Siamese twin at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Detroit. His unusually pale face disturbed the doctors. That night in the nursery, it was reported that a sort of fight broke out between Benjamin and his conjoined brother; including biting, slapping and pinching. Within the first 24 hours of being alive, Benjamin had already taken his first life. Harold Jacob Perry was pronounced dead due to suffocation at 12:01 am, December 14, 1973. This began the question among many scholars as to whether or not a person could be born inherently evil. After release from the hospital, Benjamin was kept under constant observation by the local psychiatric community, through which it was discovered that by the third grade he had already maimed and slaughtered close to 200 stray animals. It was determined that the child would never be able to tell right from wrong and never have any regard for life. However, it wasn’t until October of his fourth year of schooling, when he killed a classmate by jamming a lead pencil into the girl’s temple, that Benjamin was indefinitely institutionalized. He was admitted to the violent ward of Eloise Psychiatric Asylum. It was here that he found his one and only true friend; his standard fit straightjacket, which he appropriately named “Strate Jakit”. Benjamin told his doctors, “I know Strate Jakit is my only friend because he comes and hugs me tight every night.” During the closing of Eloise in 1981, Benjamin was released from federal care; however, he had no living family to take him in. So, the now legendary “Joka”, disappeared for good. Only resurfacing to claim his victims. It has been years since anyone has spotted the notorious Joka, some think he will not be heard from again. Others live with the fear that they will. |
